Australian Embassy is staffed with officers from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). The visa section processes visa applications for business people and tourists wishing to visit Australia and also provides advice to other visa offices that process student visas and permanent visas from applicants living in China. Australian embassy has its offices in in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

Since August 19, 2002, the Beijing embassy is responsible for processing temporary residence visa applications and Shanghai consular visa office is responsible for resident permit application. Applicants submit applications in Beijing to be forwarded to the visa office in Shanghai for accreditation.

Since December 2, 2002, when Beijing embassy receives application for travel visa to visit relatives, it transfers the application in Shanghai consular visa office for accreditation.
