573 Student Visa Notes

  Higher Education - covers a Bachelor degree, Graduate certificate, Graduate diploma and Masters Degree by coursework.

Applicants to all types of student visas are required to complete Form 157A

Economic capacity

  Applicants should provide proof of funds such as bank deposits with 6 months history. The bank deposits can be under the name of the applicant's spouse, parent, and brother / sister. Bank deposits of wife’s parents, uncles and other relatives are not acceptable.

These funds must be deposited in bank accounts and during the visa assessment period, these funds should be retained in the bank account. The assets and real estate can not serve as proof of financial guarantees.

These funds must be sufficient to afford all of the following costs:

  • All fees (the school tuition fees vary). The fees include the majors, elective courses and English language courses.

  • All the living expenses. The annual cost-of-living of single students usually take 12,000 Australian dollars
    - For spouses, you must add 35% of the annual cost of living
    - If the applicant has a child, additional 20% of the cost of living for each child (8,000 Australian dollars a year plus tuition)
    - If the applicant has many children, additional 15% for each children (8,000 Australian dollars per person per year tuition)
    - Please note: The amount of funds required to guarantee costs should include the living expense of the spouse and children.

  • The international travel of individuals. The cost for the different travels varies.

Acceptable source of funds for 573 student visa applications (without the six-month bank deposit history):

  • Scholarships offered by the central government

  • Scholarships offered by the school

  • Funding from multilateral or international organizations

  • Student loans granted by financial institutions authorized by the Central Bank.

  • Scholarships from the Australian federal, state or territory government

  • The company / corporate sponsorship must be based on the following factors: the company / enterprise does international business contacts; the program applied by the applicant is in line with the services of the company; the applicant needs work training or retraining.

Other principles of economic security:

  • The family economic security funds should be compatible with the family income.

  • If the source of funds will only cover part of the cost in Australia, the applicant must provide economic guarantees.

  • Do not accept non-cash assets as proof of funding

English requirement

Applicant should have IELTS score of not less than 5.0 and should also take not more than 30 weeks of intensive courses in English.

The visa application is stronger is the applicant’s tuition and living expenses are paid by the following units:

  • The Chinese central government departments

  • The multilateral or international organizations

  • Australian Federal, state or territory government departments

Moreover, the applicant can also provide the following English proficiency:

  • The submission of material that proves that the applicant has completed two years of high school education wherein the medium of instruction is English

  • The submission of material that proves that the applicant has the necessary conditions to study full-time higher education in Australia

Other related matters

  • Applicants will be required to provide proof such as school transcripts to show that the applicant has graduated from high school or equivalent qualifications.

  • If the course is less than 10 months and the applicant demonstrated that he will study in Australia for more than 10 months, the applicant should not be allowed to stay but still there will be some conditions. That is to say that if there are no special reasons, the applicant, during his stay in Australia, would not have to access to other types of visas.

  • Applicants may submit other materials including the applicant personal statement, experiences, qualifications and proof of academic achievements.

  • The initial student visa applications must be made outside Australia.

  • Certificate of preparatory courses (including English enhancement courses, college-preparatory courses or other).

  • Applicants under 18 years of age, not with their parents, legal guardians, or relatives must provide statement of the appropriate arrangements of the period of his accommodation in Australia. Applicant can download recognition arrangement forms from the Educational institutions in Australia and the Immigration and Multicultural Affairs Department's web site. If the applicant will live together with his parents or legal guardians, he needs to provide guardian’s name and address in Australia.

  • The applicant must be of good character. On the visa application form, applicant should fill the "character statements" and for accreditation.

  • Student visa application fee can be paid in cash or money orders.
