Australia 's higher education system is composed mainly of 36 public universities and two private universities. Half of the daily expenses of the university are from the Australian federal government funding. The rest of the expenses will come from the students’ fees or other income derived from business. Australia 's education system is enormous. This system is also attracting more overseas students to study in Australia for economic gain. The fact is foreign students in Australia accounted for 15% of the total population of students and the ratio is still increasing. The level of education in Australia is fantastic. Because of Australia’s geographical proximity to Asia, it is easy for the Asian students to study in Australia. There is no time difference which makes communication with families very convenient. Students from Southeast Asia, as well as Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, are now increasing in Australia. About 80% of the foreign students in Australia are from these countries.
The problem now for the overseas Chinese students is on how to choose Australian schools. Some surf the internet and read number of books that indicates the university rankings in Australia. But the focus of these rankings is often on academic fields which do not often correspond to the demand or objective of students. For example, in the overall rankings, the Australian National University is ranked first because it is run by the Australian government and the scientific researches are also funded by the government. Enrollment is also mainly to graduate students and there is less number of undergraduates. If you want to conduct theoretical researches, this university is a good choice. But if you want to learn a professional degree, the Australian National University should not be your first choice.
If you want a peaceful place and at the same time have the opportunity to work to support your education, you should choose Sydney or Melbourne. These two urban regions are commercially active and there are more opportunities for work. Many well-known large IT companies have their headquarters in Australia and it will be easier for you to obtain a practical learning experience.
If you like excitement and have more opportunity to meet friends, you can choose to enroll at Melbourne RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) or Monte Monash University. These two universities have a large number of students which range from 30,000 to 40,000.
