How long will it take to process student visa applications?
Once we receive your application an acknowledgement letter will be sent to you by e-mail or post within 7 working days. Your application will then be allocated to a case officer as soon as possible for assessment. If required your case officer will contact you by letter or e-mail informing you of any additional documentation need to complete your application. We suggest that you lodge your application as soon as you have all relevant documentation and at least a minimum of 12 weeks prior to your course commencement date. If you do not allow for the recommended 12 weeks there is no guarantee that you will receive your visa in time for your course start date.
Is it possible to speed up the handling of the visa application?
It is not possible. Your application is assessed in the order they are received by this office and will not be granted more than 16 weeks before your course commencement date. The amount of time taken to finalize individual applications may vary significantly depending on processing requirements.
Can I just submit first my application then I will submit later the remaining documents?
It is important that you include all the required documents when you lodge your application. Lodging a complete application can assist case officers to quickly make a decision. If you cannot provide all of the supporting documentation at time of lodgement, inform the department which documents are missing and when you expect to be able to provide them. Incomplete applications may be delayed or, in some cases, refused.
Do I need to submit the original application materials?
Yes. Some materials must be submitted Original (including IELTS test performance, school certificates and bank certificates of deposit). You can also send only the copy for other documents. Please note that the Adelaide Offshore Student Processing Centre (AOSPC) no longer requires original documentation for the purpose of processing visa applications. The application is still required to be lodged by post using the specified application form, but when providing supporting documents post PVA, please ensure they are in one of the following formats: Scanned copies of the original documents emailed directly to the AOPSC; or Scanned copies of certified documents emailed directly to the AOPSC; or Certified copies of the documents mailed to the AOPSC.
When should I pay tuition?
This is up to you to decide, however if you pay your tuition fees and you visa is unsuccessful you will need to contact your education provider to negotiate payment refunds. You may wish to wait until after you are notified by DIAC that you have passed the PVA stage before making payment to your education provider.
If I apply through an intermediary or agent, will it affect the results?
As long as you provide materials to prove that you meet the conditions of student visa requirements, your visa application will be approved. Using an intermediary will not affect the outcome of the visa.
Can I provide TOEFL results as proof of my English proficiency?
No. If you must provide proof of English proficiency, the only acceptable is IELTS examination results.
I am over 18 years of age, but I have IELTS results, can I apply to Australia in secondary school curriculum and be able to get a visa?
No. The new legislation specifies that you must be less than 18 years of age when you submit visa applications.
During the visa assessment period, can I change programs or institutions?
Yes. It is possible to change a course offer or education provider during processing of your application at any time until a final decision is made. If the new letter of offer or Confirmation of Enrolment is for a longer period than that initially provided to this office, and you change your course or education provider after the Pre-Visa Assessment (PVA) stage, your ability to meet the additional financial requirements will need to be assessed. The application would retain its place in the processing queue.
Can my relatives or guardians "guarantee" that I can study in Australia?
Visa applicants are not necessarily required to have a "guarantor." The money to support you and your family members must come from one or more acceptable sources, which may include: you, your spouse, your brother or sister, your parents, your grandparents your aunt or uncle (only if they usually live in Australia and are either a citizen/permanent resident of Australia or an eligible New Zealand citizen).
How much money do I have to prepare to obtain a student visa?
You must have enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for yourself, your spouse and your dependent children for the duration of your stay in Australia. If you come to Australia pursuing secondary education, you have to prepare 24,000. If you have a spouse and children, whether or not they are accompanied, you must indicate the situation in your visa applications. For your spouse, you have to prepare additional 35% for the annual living expense. Your first child is additional 20% and for the other children you need to prepare additional 15% each child.
If I made a study loans, when should get the cash from the bank?
Study loans apply only to the 571, 573, 574 categories of student visas. When you submit an application, you need to provide a bank letter indicating that the bank has agreed to issue you a loan at a certain amount for your study. You can only transfer the money into your personal account after the preliminary assessment of your visa application.
Can stocks and bonds serve as financial guarantees?
Stocks can not serve as financial guarantees. The only acceptable is the six months old deposit in financial institutions. Government bonds (bonds which is more than six months) can be used as financial guarantees.
If I still want to continue my further studies in Australia, can I apply for student visa extension?

If I have taken a 2-year course, can I apply for a master’s degree course in Australia?
The condition for studying for a master's degree is that you should have completed undergraduate study. If it was only a two-year college diploma, under normal circumstances, it would not be considered equivalent to a bachelor's degree.
If my first application is denied, can I re-apply?
Yes, you can reapply at any time. If your circumstances change and you wish to reapply you may do so. The application will be considered on its merits and in the light of the legislative and policy requirements applying at that time. A new application charge will apply and any future applications should include all supporting documents and address the reasons for this refusal. Please note there is no refund of the visa application charge.
Is there a need for the applicant’s parent or spouse to fill in the application form?
Yes. They should fill-in 919 tables and complete form 157A. Table 919 and 157A must be submitted together during visa application.
If I have completed my education in China under an English-medium instruction, do I still need to provide English test scores?
Yes. All applicants are required to provide English proficiency test results.
If I am a scholar student, do I also need to participate in IELTS test?
Yes. Unless the applicant's tuition and living expenses are paid by the Chinese central government departments, multilateral or international organizations or the Australian federal, state or territory government departments, the applicant must submit IELTS results.
Without Internet access, how will I obtain a visa application form?
The Australian embassy in Beijing visa office issue forms. You can fax at 01065324349. For additional visa application procedures handbook, send a letter to the visa office and give remittance of 50 yuan.
If I obtain a student loan from a bank to fund my stay in Australia, which banks are recognized by the Immigration service?
The Migration Regulations require that a bank must be governed by the central bank of the foreign country in which it operates, for it to be acceptable. Acceptable banks in China are: Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Bank of Communications, CITIC Industrial Bank, China Everbright Bank, Hua Xia Bank, Guangdong Development Bank, Shenzhen Development Bank, China Merchant Bank, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, Industrial Bank, China Minsheng Bank, Ever-growing Bank, China Zhe Shang Bank.
Do I still need 6 months savings history if I use a student loan to fully fund my study and stay in Australia?
No need.
What are the age requirements to study in secondary school in Australia?
All students except exchange students must meet specific academic and age requirements. If you are applying for your first student visa, you must provide evidence that you have successfully completed Year 9 equivalent and your age is appropriate for your proposed Year level. Note: An appropriate age means that if you are enrolled in: Year 12, you will be less than 20 years of age at the start of Year 12; Year 11, you will be less than 19 years of age at the start of Year 11; Year 10, you will be less than 18 years of age at the start of Year 10; and Year 9, you will be less than 17 years of age at the start of Year 9. You also need to show evidence of the following: That your secondary school course will be at least 16 months; that you successfully completed a recognized secondary course lasting 2 years outside Australia. The course must have an Australian curriculum and be conducted in English by an Australian provider.

How do I pay for my student visa application fee?
When making a payment to the Department for applications lodged with the Adelaide Offshore Student Processing Centre, please pay by credit card, bank cheque or money order.
Credit cards
We accept American Express, Visa, Diners Card, Mastercard and JCB credit cards. If you do not nominate the payment amount in form 157A, or fail to fill out the correct credit card details, this will result in the application being invalid. If paying by credit card please complete the details on the application form or on a separate letter with the following details: Credit card number; Expiry date; Credit card holder's name and signature; Fee amount
Bank checks
Cheques and money orders should be made out to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) in Australian dollars ($AUD) and be payable through an Australian bank or an international bank which has an office in Australia.

Will there be changes in student visa application fees?
Student visa application fees may change from time to time. You must check website for the latest student visa application fee.
Will the recent policy changes in visa application make the pre-trial period longer or shorter?
The new changes are intended to shorten the processing time of visa application.
If the materials that I submitted is not complete, will the Australian Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) directly reject my visa application or will they notify me for the supplementary materials?
In filing your visa applications, you need to provide all the required documents. Check the Australian embassy in China website to see the checklist of documents. Your application will likely be turned down soon if you will not complete all necessary documents.
Will I be notified if they have already received my visa applications?
Once DIMIA Adelaide City Center received the visa application materials, they will put a note to your files and mail you a receipt letter.
How can I review the processing of my visa application?
Australian embassy in China announce on the website the normal review cycle. Any assessment of the visa process will not be answered. However, you can always go through the following link to obtain some advice on visa policy rules and other issues.

Does the Australian embassy visa office in China continue to participate in the assessment of student visas?
The Australian embassy in China visa office assesses student visa applications with the city of Adelaide, but it does not reply to any of the student visa application inquiries.
If I passed the preliminary assessment (PVA), when and where will I send my passport and the enrollment confirmation?
If your visa application passed the first phase of the assessment (that is, pre-assessment), you will receive a written request that you will send your passport and registration confirmation notice (along with other important documents) to the Australian embassy in China. Do not send these documents to the city of Adelaide, DIMIA visa trial centers overseas.
Will I also send my passport together with the visa application materials to the city of Adelaide?
No need. DIMIA advised not to send passport to the city of Adelaide trial centers overseas. If we need your passport, we will still require you to send it to the Australian embassy in China.
At the end of my visa applications accreditation, will all the original documents that I have submitted be returned to me?
Yes. We will return your materials.
I am a Chinese citizen studying abroad (not in Australia), where will I send my student visa application if I want to study in Australia?
You submit your applications to the Australian local embassy / consulate.
I live in Hong Kong and I am a Chinese citizen, where will I send my student visa application?
If you are living in Hong Kong and Macao as Chinese citizens, whether you are holding temporary or permanent residence permit, you submit your application in the Australian Consulate General in Hong Kong.
Can I invite a friend in Australia and pay for the visa application fee?
Regardless of who is paying for your visa application fee, you are required to indicate in the receipt your name and date of birth, and attach the original pay receipts in your visa application materials.
I have applied for a student visa in the Australian embassy in Beijing but I was denied. I would like to re-apply at Adelaide City DIMIA visa center. Do I need to provide all the visa information, or will I only indicate which application materials remain on the Australian embassy in Beijing?
You should complete all the visa information when you are applying at Adelaide DIMIA visa trial centers. If you do not do this, your application will not be assessed due to lacking visa material and may soon be denied. If you only provide supplementary materials to Adelaide City DIMIA visa trial center and let them verify it from the Australian embassy in Beijing, your visa assessment time will be prolonged. These materials are for reference purposes only, not for a legal basis.
