Overview of Education in Finland |
Admission to institutions of higher education is normally based on the student achievements and college entrance performance . Finland has no unified university entrance examinations, the entrance examination is held by various institutions of higher learning for different professions. Examinations are of different standards and requirements. Candidates will be able to apply in many universities and take different university entrance examinations. Entrance examinations are held in summer and the publication of the results are in autumn before the school term begins.
Finnish Higher Education waives school fees in lieu of students’ union membership fees. All degree students studying to have a foundation are required to pay membership fees and post-graduate students are free to decide whether to pay or not. The membership fees of about 300-450 markkaa per year are mainly for the students’ medical insurance.
Foreign students wishing to study degree programs in Finland universities must provide detailed information, including nationality, educational background, language and economic status, and other information. Different schools that recruit foreign students have different requirements and standards. Generally speaking, an applicant must have completed secondary education and earned a high school diploma to have the right to be admitted in universities. These institutions of higher learning should be recognized as higher education schools. In many instances, if the applicant is not admitted in their university admission but are eligible to institutions of higher learning in Finland, then they may be accepted.
If the student want to study postgraduate courses in Finland ( Finland postgraduate courses means doctoral courses), applicants should possess a corresponding foreign university master's degree level or equivalent diploma certificate. If a foreign degree is of the same level with the Finnish University graduate degree and the degree recipient has been studying postgraduate courses but lacks the details of the professional courses, under such circumstances students entering postgraduate study will really have to learn some additional courses.
