Principle:
Students engaged in any employment should receive reasonable wage. The policy however, is that the government allows student employment only if the employment cannot affect their studies. As such, students are prohibited to engage in full-time employment. In particular, the French government allows employment of foreign students provided that the students ask permission from the concerned authorities prior to their employment. Students coming from Algeria and the European Community countries are allowed to work in France even without work permit. They are just given a temporary work permit (APT) coming from the Provincial Labor Bureau (DIRECTION DEPARTEMENTALE DE TRAVAIL). Students may apply for weekly or monthly employment. Holidays may also be a good time to apply for student employment.

1. Time:
School holidays such as annual summer vacation, Christmas and Easter holidays are the best time for students to engage in student employment. You could notice student hunting for jobs in almost everywhere.
2. Materials needed:
To apply for permission to work, employers are required to bring employment commitments (contracts) containing the specified number of hours of work, salary, and other provisions. Of course, applicants should bring their residence permit and student ID card.
Note:
Provincial Labor Bureau may reject applications under specific circumstances. Moreover, the students are not recommended to engage in any employment at least one month during the summer to ensure that they will have enough rest.

During school days, students are still allowed to engage in student wage but it must only be part-time or per hour. In the past, France prohibits any foreign student to seek student employment during their first year of study in France. But on July 9, 1998, an administrative circular was issued lifting the aforementioned provision. Since then, France gives equal opportunity to foreign students to engage in waged employment.
Requirements in Applying for Work Permits:
1.) Written application.
2.) Employment commitments (contracts) containing the specified number of hours of work, salary, and other provisions
3.) The applicant's residence permit and student ID card.
If approved, the applicant will receive a maximum of nine months period of validity of the temporary work permits. The permit allows the bearer to engage even in professional waged activities. .
Note:
Provincial Labor Bureau may reject applications under specific circumstances. Some applications can be easily approved while others may be difficult. Generally, for some students often engaged in unpaid work such as translation, child care, laboratory work, and other odd jobs would be easily approved. In addition, the academic records of the applicant may also affect the approval process.
Other notes:
1. In any circumstance, you must pay attention to the terms and conditions set in the contract with your employer. Study and understand specific provisions such as the daily working hours, job description, and working conditions. See also the conditions for emergence leave, rewards and rest days.
2. The length of the probationary period: for one month employment, probationary would not be more than three days. For two months, it would not be more than five days.
3. Standard Minimum Wage (SMIC). Based on the current standards, the hourly wage is 6.67 euros per hour. If the student works for 169 hours a month, the gross salary must be about 1,126 euros or a net salary of 892.77 euros.
4. All employees are entitled to a paid leave (Congés Comptroller). Employees also enjoy paid holidays for aggregate wages of 10%.
5. Temporary work permit is valid only for nine months. by no means can any holder work beyond the specified validity period of the permit.
6. Students on part-time work basis should not work beyond 20 hours a week. If the student is engaged in teaching assistantship, teaching time should not exceed 10 hours a week.
7. Students are warned not to engage in illegal employment such as working without the temporary work permit. If found violating this policy, the Labor Bureau may cancel your residence permit and the illegal employer will be punished accordingly.
8. Under normal circumstances, the result of applications may be released within three to six weeks after submission of application materials.
Recommendations:
Foreign students are recommended to not seek employment during their first year of study in France as this will surely affect their studies. It is advised that students must learn the French language first and may do some light work only.
