Germany has a high standard of living and the cost of living and studying in Germany is relatively high. According to the 1997 cost of living index, the average monthly cost of living in each of the old states (former German region) is approximately 1,300 marks. In the new federal states (former East region), it is approximately 1,000 marks.
German State Universities do not charge tuition, however, students must pay the following costs of study:

To the “student social services center” (Studentenwerk) and the social welfare services (Sozi algebuehr), depending on the school, each semester is ranging from 35 marks to 90 marks.

Medical insurance: about 100 marks per month.
Books and other school supplies: Depending on the specialty, each semester costs between 450 marks to 600 marks. |
