Hong Kong has six good universities namely: Chinese University of Hong Kong,Hong Kong University,Hong Kong Polytechnic University,City University of Hong Kong,Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Hong Kong Baptist University. Among these famous universities, the Chinese University and Hong Kong University were established earlier by around seventy years than the others. Application for admission to the Hong Kong universities has great similarities with the application process for US universities. The following are the similarities and differences of application to Hong Kong universities and US universities

First, universities in both countries accept on line inquiries and consultation such as program overview, department background, financial assistantship and scholarship and application goals. For online inquiries to Hong Kong universities, please log on to their respective websites such as http://hku.edu.hk for Hong Kong University, http://cityu.edu.hk for City University of Hong Kong, etc.

Applicants to graduate school of Hong Kong universities must provide the following general requirements:

  • Notarized undergraduate transcripts (with English translation)

  • English proficiency: TOEFL scores are preferred than IELTS.

  • GRE results: With the intense competition, Hong Kong's universities now require GRE results.

  • Application forms: As a general rule, application forms are sent to you through e-mail and then send back the filled out form to the admission office or program department as the case maybe.

Unlike universities in the United States, Hong Kong universities ask applicants to explain their intention of study in a broader perspective rather than specific. Application materials are generally free of charge, and can be downloaded from the website. If you wish that application forms be sent to you though mail, applicants are asked to pay ten Hong Kong dollars for the express fee.

Unlike US universities, which give great importance to Personal Statements, Hong Kong Universities give more attention to Research Proposals. While Personal Statements include experiences and emotional flavor, Research Proposals are purely academic. Universities in Hong Kong see it necessary for students to have a clear program of research.

The following are characteristics of good research proposals:

  • The topic must be specific rather than broad. It must clearly state the problem and objective. The significance of the problem must also be indicated.

  • Methodology to be used must be effective and relevant.

  • Bibliography must always be comprehensive and accurate. Researchers usually overlook this part.

  • In general, it is advisable for the student to find a professor who could give helpful advice on research proposals.

Universities in Hong Kong generally require two letters of recommendation. Recommendations must be concise and factual. It must contain your academic evaluation and other relevant experiences. Application fee is far cheaper than in the United States. Generally, application fee is no more than 100 HK Dollars. Students who wish to apply for scholarship must apply for fulltime study program. Moreover, though the standard cost of living in Hong Kong is high, the student has nothing to worry about study expenses if he/she will be qualified for financial assistantship amounting to around 15,000 HK Dollars.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong's high standard of living, cost-of-living increase in school fees for at least 10,000 Hong Kong dollars a month, most people can not afford certain time, but if the STUDENTSHIP (about 14,000 to 15,000 per month), all expenses will not have to worry.
