The DSEJ is the government department which is responsible for Macao’s education and youth. Schools in Macao are private or subsidized by the government. The public schools emphasized on bilingual education, learning both Chinese and Portuguese. Most schools teach language, mathematics, sciences and social sciences subjects. There are only few vocational schools that teach technical subjects such as car repair and electrical engineering.
Most schools teach Chinese and English and also Portuguese  for some schools. Macau was returned to China in 1999 and some Mandarin language schools teach certain subjects. Most of the primary schools teach Cantonese and some in English but secondary schools teach English. Minority of professors are proficient in other languages such as French.
Macau is not yet complete in reunifying and adopting the present education system. Therefore, the different schools in Macau designed their curriculum according to the needs and goals of the Chinese, British and Portuguese education system.
Chinese students study six years of primary education, three years of junior high school, and two or three years in the senior high school. In the senior year, the students are required to study science, business or the arts.
British education system accept the six-year primary school education, three years of junior high, and one to two years in the senior high wherein students studied science, business or the arts. After finishing senior high school, the students are required to participate in educational institutions from the United Kingdom ( Cambridge University and London University), the GCE.
Students under Portuguese education system should have four-year elementary education, five-year middle school and three-year high school education. Portuguese is the main language of instruction.
Macao implements ten-year free education system including pre-primary to third grade in junior secondary in schools belong to the public education network or to the schools that are subsidized by the government. Macau also provides supply assistantship to the schools not in the network or those that are not subsidized.
