Employment and work in Singapore
There are many employment opportunities in Singapore and it is very easy to apply for the right of residency. Postgraduate students who opt to stay in Singapore can not only look for employment but they can also start their own business.
1. |
Working time |
|
Singapore 's constitutional working hours is 44 hours per week. Most local companies work from Monday to Friday (eight hours) and Saturday morning (4 hours). In other companies (mostly foreign companies) take five days of work but the daily hours of work is about nine hours. Production line staff of manufacturing companies usually works in shifts so that they can divide their time for working hours and rest time. |
2. |
Vacation |
|
Generally, for the first year and second year, staffs will be given 7 to 14 days annual leave vacation. On the third year, it will increase to 9-18 days. Unless surgery or hospitalization, companies also provide accumulated sick leave of not more than 2 weeks in a year. |
3. |
Probation |
|
Normally, probationary period comes in three months, but some companies employ six months probationary period. During the probationary period the employer should provide the appropriate training and then assess the competency and performance of the staff. Staff may also use this time to adapt to the environment. Unless there are contract bonds, both the employers and employees can terminate the employment relationship if the employee will not pass the training or if the employer will not meet the conditions during this period and should be given in a week notice. If the employers and employees are satisfied with each other’s conditions then they can agree a formal work employment and usually their salaries will increase. During the probationary period, the staff does not usually enjoy benefits such as sick leave, medical claims, etc.. |
4. |
Bonuses |
|
In accordance with the usual practice, most companies give the equivalent annual bonuses in December to staffs, known as the 10th month bonuses or year-end bonuses. Some companies use the length of service of the employee to determine the year-end bonuses. Good performances in the company will have a certain special bonus. |
5. |
Wages |
|
Monthly wages are usually issued to employees every half of the month. To prevent default on the payment of salaries, a Wages Act is passed to order that wages must be paid at least once a month. For Singapore citizens and permanent residents, the employer and employee must pay for their provident fund. Employees that are below the age of 55 will receive the current rate of pay. The employer will pay for 12% of the total wages and the employees pay for 20% for the provident fund. So all in all employees are getting 112% of wage but they could only spend 80% of it. |
6. |
Compensation for injuries |
|
Under the Compensation Act, if the employees are injured due to work-related injury or illness, they will receive compensation from the employers. In case of staff workers death, their families will be given compensation. From January 1, 1996, permanent injuries compensation maximum amount is 147, 000 Singapore dollars. For death cases, the maximum amount of compensation is 111, 000 Singapore dollars. In addition, the employer must also pay the medical expenses, hospitalization costs, and the employees’ usual wages during healing period. |
7. |
Resignation |
|
Unless there are other contract bonds, the employee can resign but he should give an advance notice to the employer. For employment permit holders and inducement, the resignation means that their permit is already invalid. Unless they can find a new employer to re-apply for a license, the person must leave Singapore. |
8. |
Layoffs |
|
Companies have the right to layoff employees and give corresponding compensation. Service of each employee is usually less than three years. Of course, the specific amount of compensation that will be given to the employee is according to the company's financial position. |
