Spanish educational system includes general and special education. The different levels of education are adapted to suit students with special needs. Following is a brief introduction about the characteristics of education in Spain.
University Situation: Spain education has three stages. In the first stage (first year to third year), the focus of education is to build and instill awareness of the humanities and geography. In the second stage (fourth year to fifth year), the students are required to complete all courses and they are given professional training. After passing the examination and studying for another two years, students will obtain their masters degree. They will be required to write a dissertation paper to complete the third stage and receive a Ph.D. Many foreign students are now considering to study in Spain.
To promote Spain’s history and culture and also to promote Western States government, Spain welcomes foreign students. Applicants from outside Spain can address their application to any institution or university of their choice. The following factors affect the objectives of foreign students in enrolling in Spain universities:
1. University freshmen: All foreign students who are high school diploma holders in their home country and which are recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education may apply in universities, colleges, and schools in Spain.
2. Conversion of credits: Foreign students who have received university education in their home which is recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education may receive credits for their courses but not for some refresher courses. Some university departments do not recognize some credits, but they do convert some needed courses and they offer refresher courses especially to those who want to be awarded a Masters degree.
3. Doctoral Programs: Universities in Spain offers doctoral research programs and allow completion of a master’s degree for foreign students. They should apply at the institution of higher education for the certification of academic qualifications and for the recognition of their study achievements. Usually after two years and after finishing the doctoral research and passing the examination, students will be awarded a doctorate degree.
4. Spanish Language: Universities usually have Spanish language study courses. These courses are offered for foreign students, usually for one-year duration. Foreign students may also be admitted in p ublic language schools as long as they have interest in learning, the ability to think, and as long as they pass the examination. There are also private language schools specialized in teaching foreigners to study Spanish. In these schools, Spanish language is spoken mainly to strengthen student’s proficiency. There are also other elective courses such as Spanish culture, history, and others.
5. Music: Spanish music and dance schools are highly promising and are quite famous in Europe. Spain is a good choice for those who have unique style of music, skilled in dance, and those who are music lovers and interested learners. The Academy of Music and the Royal Academy of Music in Barcelona are prestigious schools in music. The Music Institute of Science courses can be divided into three stages wherein students make their post-art at the beginning of each stage. There are about seven Spanish dance schools, including the Madrid Royal Dance School.
6. Art Education: In Europe, Spain is renowned in art and has rich culture. Major cities were decorated with art and there are many arts schools.
7. Department of Tourism: Tourism has great importance in Europe. The Spanish tourism schools are in the major cities specialized in training tourist administrative personnel. Foreign students studying tourism courses usually spend three years. |
