For security purposes, students are encouraged to have bank accounts and insurance. In Britain, different regions have different major banks such as Royal Bank of Scotland, HSBC Bank, MasterCard but students must look for banks that are near his/her school or residence. In applying for a bank account, you have to present several documents which include your passport, visa, and residence address. You may request your landlord to provide you a certificate to support your residence information. After opening a bank account, you will be provided with all the services. However, if you just stay in UK for less than six months, some services may not be provided for you such as the use of bank check. Moreover, take note that different banks have different preferences and interest rates are also different.
As regards to Insurance, students who study for more than six months in UK may enjoy free national health services. However, if you study for less than six months, you need to buy your own health insurance. You also need to buy insurance for your car, in case you wish to buy one. Furthermore, if you buy other expensive items, such as computers and mobile phones, you can also buy insurance for them to prepare for contingency.
